Permission To Use Song - Aaron:

Introduction:

Aaron - Before we could begin planning our ideas for the song, we had to gain permission to use it. I (Aaron) emailed a member of 'Interscope Records' for permission to use 'All of This' - Blink 182, as the screen shot below shows.

Lyric Image Video - Group:

Introduction:

Group - This task required us to create a lyric image video for our chosen song, Blink 182 - All Of This, as well as conduct a lyrical analysis (see individual research pages). The lyric image video gives examples of ideas that we could explore for our music video. We created this by finding images across the web which we thought link to the lyrics, helping ourselves and the audience visualise the lyrics better. The video plays our chosen song (Blink 182 - All Of This) and was created using 'iMovie', eventually exported via 'YouTube'.

What Have We Learnt And How Will This Influence Our Ideas?

Group
-
From creating the lyric image video we have discovered multiple ideas that we could use in our music video. An example of these includes our video could have some scenes set at night due to the lyrics of "another night with her" - keeping cohesion between both visuals and lyrics. Our actor for the narrative side of the video could appear lonely/isolated at the beginning, again, establishing a sense of cohesion between the slow paced lyrics (at the start of the song) and visuals. Overall, the elements included within our lyric image video will influence our planning because we can use some of the on screen visuals as plots within our narrative. Due to the lyrics themselves, our video will most likely follow male and female characters, although our ideas can continue to develop. Having reviewed our audience research, our video will include both performance based and narrative based content and so it is important that we create an appropriate plot.

Pitch - How Will Brand Identity Be Established Across Our Three Products - Group:

Introduction:

Group - During this task, we had to pitch our thoughts and ideas on how we would establish brand identity across our three products to a client (in this case our media class). To do this, we created an interactive presentation using 'Prezi', to form the backdrop of our pitch while we were recorded on camera (later exported via 'YouTube'). The Prezi included several images and small pieces of information, keeping the audience engaged as we elaborated on the points shown. The purpose of the pitch was to prove that we had a clear vision as to how we wanted our final three products to appear when complete - to a professional standard.

Product Planning Ideas:

Introduction:

Both myself (Aaron) and Idrees as a group have produced three initial ideas for our 3 ancillary products before persuing any major planning. We did this so that we could bring together our initial ideas for the music video, digipak and website page and suggest how each could be created. Across the 3 products we have considered narrative/performance and layout/content and so on relating to the respective products (e.g. music video etc.), having reviewed our target audience research.

- Each image shows 3 initial ideas for the ancillary products and will develop as we continue the planning process of our music video, digipak and website:

Aaron - Design 1:

Aaron - Brief Summary:

The music video for my first idea begins with a man waking up in his bedroom to find all of his belongings scattered across the floor. He then sees his girlfriend driving off, triggering the performance part of the video. During this, various shots are used of the artist/band singing in a studio. During the songs final stages, the man heavily drinks causing him to go unconsious as the music ends.

The digipak for my first idea contains six panels each showing off different features conventional of digipaks. Some of these include track listing, a cover image of the artist looking at the camera (providing the target audience with a sense of unity) and a quote from the artist amongst others. A possible logo has also been included which could create a sense of brand identity should we choose to use it.

The website for my first idea is very simple, typical of the genre. It is divided into sections such as 'social media' and 'news', whilst also containing a navigation bar at the top of the page below the artist name banner. I included these extra pages as from our research, we found that they are typical on most websites, not just websites primarily based around music.

Aaron - Design 2:

Aaron - Brief Summary:

The music video for my second idea again makes use of both narrative and performance as this is what we found our target audience mostly enjoyed. The video begins with a boy looking at 'Holly's' social networking page and discovering she has a boyfriend. It then cuts to various shots of performance based content of the artist singing. The latter stages of the video conclude with the boy talking to the girl.

The digipak for my second idea again uses six panels, making use of typical conventions such as an image of the band/artist, track listing and the artists logo. If we were to instead choose a four panel digipak then we could consider moving the artist logo onto the CD to ensure brand identity remains in our product.

The website for my second idea makes use of the same content, however the overall layout has changed. There is a vertical navigation bar (instead of horizontal) on the left hand side of the page, leaving a large portion of the page for content such as 'social media' etc. I feel that this tidy, simplistic look will appeal to our target audience as successful artists like the 'Arctic Monkeys' and 'Imagine Dragons' also have simple layouts.

Aaron - Design 3:

Aaron - Brief Summary:

The music video for my third idea skips the musical intro to the song (about 16 seconds) and begins with the artist singing at the camera. The video then cuts to the narrative showing off various scenes of the main actor walking, drinking (relatable to the target audience of 16-25 year olds) etc. Instead of the performance side of the video being based in a studio, the artist could potentially sing as the camera tracks his movement in urban areas. The video concludes with the boy laying in bed with his girlfriend looking annoyed that he is not with 'Holly' (the female love interest within the song).

The digipak for my third idea consists of only four panels to ensure a simple look containing only relevant information. Both inside and outside of the digipak will provide the target audience with a mixture of image and text based content, as this is what we found to be most sought after from our target audience research. The cover image shows the artist looking directly at the audience, showing off the genres 'confrontational' side. We also need to ensure that our artist is wearing conventional clothing and can gather ideas from our moodboard analysis.

The website for my third idea makes use of an artist image behind the navigation bar in the center of the screen to provide audience engagement. Both the 'news' and social media' feeds keep fans updated with the latest information, along with pages such as 'tours' etc. found on the above navigation bar.

Storyboards:

Introduction:

Aaron - Both myself and Idrees produced individual initial hand-drawn storyboards of what we thought our narrative could be, before combining our initial thoughts and creating a final storyboard. The initial storyboards aim to be a rough vision for our individual selves, showcasing how we would produce our videos narrative individually. The storyboards also show some forms of cinematography that could be used during our video.

Group Storyboard - Final Ideas:

Idrees - For our final storyboard, me and my partner combined our ideas so that we had a good idea of what our final music video would look like. we did this by looking at each others storyboards and individually picking out the best scenes from each of the storyboards to create the best possible video we could make. The main difference between our initial storyboards the inclusion of a female actor. In the end we decided to include a female as it simply would make the narrative confusing and dull without a female character. This will allow us to clearly create cohesion with the lyrics and visuals and follow Andrew Goodwins theory.

Actor Auditions:

Introduction:

Aaron - In order to get actors for our music video, we created a poster using 'Photoshop' and printed off several copies of it. We placed the posters around college, which allowed us to reach out to a range of people from the ages of 16-19. Sadly, no one came to the auditions or contacted us via email, so we decided to audition two of our friends who were willing to appear in the video.

Risk Assessments - Aaron:

Aaron - This task required us to create risk assessments to make sure that we are following health and safety guidelines throughout our work. I (Aaron) created the risk assessments using Microsoft Word for each stage of production - ensuring we know all possible dangers and risks.

- The links below will take you to each risk assessment according to their headings:

Filming Location Permission - Aaron:

Introduction:

Aaron - This task required us to ask for filming permission for locations that we are going to use in our video. We did this by writing letters to homeowners, county councils etc. explaining to them that the task was for educational purposes only, and that environments would be left in the same conditions they were found.

Initial Artist Name Ideas - Aaron:

Aaron - Before developing ideas for our music video, website page and digipak, we created a mindmap using the online software provided by 'www.examtime.com' to think of names for our artist. This allowed us to show potential names in a more visually interesting way due to us never having used this technology/website before.

Mind Map created by Aaron Idrees with ExamTime

Target Audience Feedback - Artist Names:

Aaron - In order to establish a sense of brand identity, after some lengthy discussion as a group, we chose 6 of the best possible names that we could potentially call our artist. We based these decisions on both the look and sound of the names, not on whether we thought if they were conventional, as we didn't think that was necessary. Having chosen these names, I (Aaron) created a mindmap using 'Microsoft Powerpoint' and handed the sheet around to members of our target audience.

Aaron - The potential name of 'Shaun Porter' gained 6 votes out of a possible 10, meaning that this was the name our target audience thought was best suited for our promotional package. Going forward, we will most probably use this name as it was chosen by our target audience, however, our thoughts and ideas may change as the project goes on.

Target Audience Feedback - Artist Name Typeface Designs:

Aaron - As 'brand identity' is paramount to our products success, we chose a number of potential typeface designs that we could use for our artist name (others could feature as typefaces for our album name and general text). I created a Microsoft Word document containing all of the typefaces that we liked, printed it off and handed it round to members of our target audience.

Aaron - The typeface 'Libby' was chosen as best suited for our artist name, many people citing that they found the "simplicity" of it appealing. Personally, I feel that the typeface 'Wrestlemania' (second most voted for) would be a more fitting typeface for our artist, as it seems very unique. I disagree with people who chose 'Libby' as the artist name and personally think it would make for a better album name typeface. Further discussions will take place during the group, however, to ensure that both of us are happy with any design chosen. We will possibly use the 'Libby' typeface in our draft to gain feedback but these are only our initial ideas.

Artist Logo Idea:

Aaron - After sitting down as a group and discussing our initial product planning ideas of logos, we decided that we needed to think outside of the box. Logos are a typical convention within alternative rock, featuring across successful bands such as 'Foo Fighters' and 'Imagine Dragons' products and so we needed to think of a unique idea. In the drawings for our initial ideas, we thought about our artist logo being a phone booth, the British flag etc. but all of these seemed too common. We reffered back to our lyrical analysis that we conducted near the start of the project and came up with a very good potential idea.

Aaron - I came up with the idea of having angel wings, devil horns and a halo. The reason for this, was because due to the lyrics, many different people will have their own perspective of the protagonist of the song. Whatever colours we decide to use for our 'house style' theme, they could be split 50/50 down the centre of the image. For example, one side could be white and the other black, holding connotations of angels and demons, two sides to every story etc. Due to the genre and target audience being stereotypically associated with rebellious styles, we thought as a group this image would be a pefect way to present that - due to its dark connotations. Like with our other potential ideas, we are still only during the planning stages of the project and so this design could evolve/change.

Computer Roughs:

Aaron - We each created individual computer roughs of our ancillary products (digipak and website) based on our initial planning ideas. These computer roughs will form the basis of our draft ancillary products, however, designs may chop and change as we progress through the construction stage.
