Analysis Of Three Products:

Introduction:

This research task required me to analyse a music video, website page and digipak from an artist of my choice. The artist I chose was 'Imagine Dragons' because they are a modern and also  popular band who are continuing to grow within the alternative rock genre. I wrote a detailed essay for my music video analysis using Microsoft Word, later converting it into a Slideshare presentation as I thought it would be a better way of displaying a lengthy essay in a more visually appealing form. For my website page, I created a screen recording and uploaded the analysis via 'YouTube' as I beleive it was the most effective way of presenting my analysis whilst also showing a good range of technology. Lastly, I analysed my digipak through 'Prezi' as I thought it would be a more visually interesting way of analysing it, instead of creating a plain essay/powerpoint to present my ideas.

What have I learnt and how will this influence my ideas?

From completing this task I now know a number of conventions/stereotypes prominent within the alternative rock genre that I can incorporate into my groups' own three products. An example from the homepage analysis, would be that it is largely both image based and text based due to the target audience enjoying visually appealing images of the artist and also relevant information, providing them with extra details about the band/artist.

In the digipak analysis, the colour scheme was dark blue and pink (for the cover), with grey/black backgrounds working with white contrasting text for the back and inside covers. This simplistic colour scheme would appeal to the target audience due to the colours black and white being conventional of the alternative rock genre. Whilst the unique dark pink and blue clouds help to give the band their own identity.

Finally, the costumes worn by the artists in the music video consist of dark colour schemes and this is evident on all members of the band, not just lead singer Dan Reynolds. They all wore dark clothing, some also with hoods connoting the harsh side to the genre, artist and audience.

In conclusion, this will influence my thoughts and contributions to the groups initial planning because I have learnt key conventions and stereotypes used by a very popular alternative rock band in Imagine Dragons. Their three products will help to shape our own as I could suggest to model ours in a similar style to Imagine Dragons, due to their professional and interesting appeal. The main influence this will have on our products is the use of dark colours to adhere to conventions of the genre.

Lyric Analysis:

Introduction:

For this task, I had to create an individual lyrical analysis for the song that we will be creating our music video for (Blink 182 - 'All of This'). I did this by printing a copy of the songs lyrics and annotating them, exploring possible narrative options that could be created for our music video. We have also created a lyric-image video for our chosen song which is located on our 'planning' page.

Applying For Production Roles:

Introduction:

This task required us to individually apply for production roles for each of our 3 ancillary products before making them. This will prove to be very useful, as within our group we can discuss what stages of production we will undertake for each of our ancillary products. I decided to present my application using 'Infogram' as I myself have not yet used this technology and it is very neat and effective.

Evaluation:

Introduction:

At the beginning of the project, my coursework objectives were to create three ancillary products (a music video, website and digipak), three media formats that are utilized by artists within the contemporary music industry. Across the project, there were multiple stages including research, planning, contruction and evaluation. Throughout these stages, I gained experience and skills in areas that I did not previously have much knowledge in. The main areas that I feel I gained the most skills from were the filming and editing stages during the construction part of the project - mainly due to never having been required to shoot and edit a music video.

The song that me and my group chose to create our music video for is 'All Of This' by Blink 182 - featuring Robert Smith (from popular band The Cure). The genre of the song is alternative rock - it's lyrics depicting a man torn between two women leading to internal conflict. After analysing the lyrics, as a group, we decided to portray them in our own way throughout the video using elements of both narrative and performance in a way that would appeal to our target audience of 16-25 year olds.

When completing my evaluation, I first answered each question in an essay format using 'Microsoft Word'. This enabled me to thoroughly answer each individual question in as much detail as possible. Once each question had been fully written up and completed to the best of my ability, I converted them into technologies as this would gain me more marks. The tachnologies I used are as follows; Prezi, Screen Recording (embedded into Inforgram), SoundCloud Podcast and another Screen Recording (both were exported via YouTube).

Question 1: "How did you use new media technologies in the research, planning, construction and evaluation of your project?"

To answer evaluation question 1 I created a PREZI (with audio) to convey my ideas using a different technology.

Question 2: "How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?"

To answer evaluation question 2 I created a SCREEN RECORDING embedded in an INFOGRAM chart to convey my ideas using multiple technologies.

Question 3: "What have you learned from your audience feedback?"

To answer evaluation question 3 I created a PODCAST to convey my ideas using a different technology.

Question 4: "In what ways does your product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?"

To answer evaluation question 4 I created SCREEN RECORDINGS to convey my ideas using a different technology.

NOTE: I had to create a seperate video for each of my three products, as Microsoft Expression does not allow a single recording to exceed 10 minutes.
