Diary Entries:

SIGNING OFF:

Group Entry 26/01/15:

Today is deadline day. We would have like to of completed more diary entries, however, this past week we have been focusing on ensuring everything is on our blog. We are both pleased with the final outcome of our products and will take with us many of the skills we have learned for using a wide range of technologies.

Individual Entry: Idrees - 11/01/15:

Today I completed question 1 and 4 of my evaluation questions as I was using the same technology for these questions. in these two questions I used 'Windows Expression' to screen record as I felt that it was important to back up my information visually.

Individual Entry: Aaron - 9/01/15:

Today I continued my evaluation questions. I completed questions 1 and 4 during the past week and so today I wanted to make a start on question 3. In between writing up my evaluation we have been working on the construction to meet the deadline on the 14th.

Group Entry 3/01/15:

Today we continued to film the narrative and performance parts of our video. We filmed the car scenes, woodland scenes and closing shots of the video today to wrap up filming. Both me and Idrees met with our actor Oscar at 9:00am to make sure that we got the most out of the day.

Group Entry - 22/12/14:

Today we filmed some narrative and performance parts of our video. We hired out a tracking dolly in order to get multiple steady moving shots for our performance side of the video. This was one of the improvements that was suggested in order to get a better overall grade.

Group Entry - 21/12/14:

As today was the final day of term, we made sure that we took all of our footage off of the college computer so that we can use some of the shots when editing over half term. We also hired out a Nikon, tripod and dolly so that our shots are more steady - this was one of our downfalls in the initial draft.

Individual Entry: Aaron - 14/12/14:

Today we received feedback for our initial ancillary drafts. It is evident that a lot of work is needed to be done as our draft products are no where near the standard that they need to be in order to achieve a high grade.

Individual Entry: Idrees - 10/12/14:

As we were waiting for our feedback, we decided to catch up on all of the tasks we had not previously completed.

Group Entry - 5/12/14:

Today was the final draft deadline for our first attempt at the ancillary products. Thankfully we had a double lesson as we needed some more footage for our video. Once we filmed the final scenes, we returned to college to finish editing the video and uploaded it via 'YouTube' before embedding onto the construction page of our blog.

Individual Entry: Idrees - 3/12/14:

Today me and Aaron started the construction of our draft digipak during our media lesson. We downloaded a template and began constructing the digipak ready to meet the deadline on the 5th of December.

Individual Entry: Aaron - 3/12/14:

Today I downloaded a template from www.diskmakers.com for our digipak because I felt that making our own would be time consuming. I downloaded a four panel digipak because having reviewed our target audience research, our audience said that they prefer more simplistic designs with a mixture of both text and image based content.

Group Entry - 26/11/14:

As today we had a double media lesson, we began to film our music video at our location in New Haw (see planning page). We hired out a Nikon camera and a tripod from the college media department. Although we didn't get a lot of filming done, we got to grips with the equipment and the overall setup of the camera so that during our next filming session, things will run smoother.

Individual Entry: Aaron - 17/11/14:

Today I emailed Runnymede Borough Council for filming permission in New Haw. Our location is underneath a motorway in a very urban looking area so we hope to gain permission as it looks conventional. In the email, I explained politely that our filming would be for educational purposes only.

Group Entry - 12/11/14:

Today we filmed auditions for our music video. Unfortunately, no one turned up to our open auditions so we had to get a couple of friends. We auditioned Oscar Chatterji, who has had previous acting experience and also Jack Jeffrey, a previous media student. Overall, we thought Oscar was the superior actor and so we have given him the lead role in our music video. However, Jack could still potentially be a supporting actor.

Individual Entry: Idrees - 7/11/14:

In today's lesson we received video recordings from Steve giving use feedback about our blogs. We have quite few improvements to make as we are missing a few things however we aim to complete the outstanding task by the end of the week.

Individual Entry: Aaron - 7/11/14:

Today we received feedback for our research and planning sections of the blog. Steve, our teacher, produced a voice recording going through our blog pointing out some of the things we were missing. It was evident that we were missing a lot of things, including some blog posts. Throughout the coming weeks we are going to ensure that we catch up with any missing work so that it does not obstruct the filming of our music video.

Group Entry - 5/11/14:

Today we went into the studio to practise using the equipment with a group of other media students as 'Louise' the media technician was giving a talk. This proved to be helpful because she showed us how to use the green screen, dolly etc. which could come in handy when we begin filming our music video.

Individual Entry: Idrees - 31/10/14:

Today I created an 'info gram'  discussing convention that are frequently used in the alternative rock genre. I discussed common narrative stories, props, themes etc. that are used to appeal to the target audience. This has given me some good ideas as it has allowed to research what conventions are used to make an appealing alternative rock product.

Individual Entry: Aaron - 31/10/14:

During today's lesson and this evening, I created a poster requesting actors that could potentially star in our music video. I did this using 'Photoshop' so that we could then pin up some posters around the college.

Group Entry - 27/10/14:

Today we finished and uploaded the 'Prezi' for our pitch. We found creating the Prezi to be useful when presenting the pitch because at points we were stuck for words and so the Prezi proved to be a good reference point.

Individual Entry: Idrees - 24/10/14:

In today's lesson me and Aaron finished our storyboards based on the ideas we had in our previous initial planning. This has given us a good idea of the narrative of our music video.

Individual Entry: Aaron - 22/10/14:

Today, we both sat down in our double lesson and produced individual storyboards based on some of the ideas provided in our 'initial planning' task. Once the storyboards are complete, we will upload them individually summarising our ideas, before producing a final storyboard where we bring our ideas together.

Group Entry - 17/10/14:

Today we began preparing a pitch for our artists' management entitled "How brand identity will be established across the 3 products". We did this by creating a 'Prezi' that will form the backdrop of our presentation when we present to the class. It aims to provide the audience with extra information while we justify our thoughts and ideas.

Group Entry - 15/10/14:

Today we completed our initial planning for our music video, digipak and website. We sat down and drew out initial, rough designs for our ancillary products on A4 paper. Then, we scanned the designs into the computer, putting them onto our blog and writing a brief summary of what each idea displays.

Individual Entry: Aaron - 13/10/14:

Today I uploaded my individual research task onto my page of the blog. This task required me to analyse a website of an artist within a similar genre. I produced a screen recording of myself talking over the band 'Imagine Dragons' website, analysing some of the key conventions that they have included throughout their website. Things such as social networks etc. all allow for fan interactivity which is something we will have to consider when making our website, due to our target audience being between the ages of 16-25 year olds.

Individual Entry: Idrees - 10/10/14

Today I completed our website ideas for our final product. In this task i decided to look at various alternative rock webpages such as The1975.com to gain a greater understanding of the common conventions used in these webpages. In this task i found that that the use of 6-8 tabs are mostly used in these sites and the most frequent tab used was the 'Tickets' tab which was fans could  find dates for the bands upcoming concerts and purchase tickets from this page. Also another convention used in the implementation of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Since the primary audience of alternative rock tend to be between the ages of 16-25 also known as 'digital natives' fans will be able to connect with their favourite bands on the go. This task will allow us as a group to implement these conventions to create a conventional alternative rock webpage to appeal to our target audience.

Individual Entry: Aaron - 7/10/14

Today I finished and uploaded our research into the different production roles needed for pre production, production and post production. We created a 'PowToon' video to discuss the different roles needed for each ancillary production and uploaded it via 'YouTube'.

Individual Entry: Idrees - 7/10/14

Today I started our website ideas using powtoon. In this task I hope to gain a good understanding of commonly used conventions used in alternative rock webpages.

Group Entry - 4/10/14:

Over the past couple of days we have been working on the ideas for our music video. To present our ideas we have used 'Infogram' as we could clearly present my ideas using this program. In this task we discussed how we could apply stereotypical conventions used within the alternative rock genre to appeal to our primary audience. Conventions such as using both narrative and performance in our music video was popular among our audience as it was commonly used in the genre. Also the use of props in the performance element of the video are also common as the use of guitars and drums are symbolic of the genre. We also gave our 3 ideas for our music video's and considered what are common narrative stories used within the genre. Lastly we visited the location for our music video and took photos to present our location ideas. This task has given me a greater understanding of alternative rock conventions and we will aim to implement this research to create a successful alternative rock music video.

Group Entry: 1/10/14:

Today we emailed the land lord of the place we wish to film our music video. We are yet to hear from them however we should be able to film in our chosen location.

Individual Entry: Aaron - 28/09/14:

For my individual research, I completed my lyric analysis of our chosen song (Blink 182 - 'All of This'). I did this by printing out a copy of the lyrics and annotating them giving my interpretation of the meaning of the song.

Individual Entry: Idrees - 28/09/14:

Today I analysed the lyric to our chosen song Blink 182 'All of this' i looked at each line and gave my interpretation of the song's meaning. This has allowed me to gain a greater understanding of the story and will help me create a narrative that is coherent with the lyrics of the song to appeal to our audience.

Individual Entry: Aaron - 26/09/14:

I also completed my production roles task today. I achieved this by creating an 'Infogram'  stating which specific roles that I think I will be the ideal candidate for. I applied for roles such as 'director' and 'camera operator' etc. and explained why I feel that I suit these roles.

Individual Entry: Idrees - 26/09/14:

Today I completed my the task for production roles. In this task I applied for the roles that I thought that I would be most suited to. I applied for roles for the digipak, webpage and music video. I feel that the roles that i have applied for will an able our group to create a successful final product to achieve a high grade.

Individual Entry: Idrees - 25/09/14:

In todays lesson I managed to complete my analysis for the alternative rock webpage. For this task I analysed The 1975. This is because they are a stereotypical, conventional alternative rock band, which follow many conventions of the genre. This has helped me greatly as I now have a better understanding of the conventions used to appeal to our target audience. This information is vital as we need to include these conventions to create a successful alternative rock website.

Week 3 Group Meeting:

Today we had our third group meeting to plan when to do this weeks tasks. We plan to finish all of the tasks and outstanding work before next week.

Group Entry - 22/09/14:

We have completed our initial audience research. We did this using Survey Monkey questionnaires and interviews which we still need to upload to Youtube and to our blog. Firstly, we have learnt that the age demographic of our target audience is 16-25 so we must appeal to this age group. An example would be that we would include both performance and narrative in our music video as our research has told us to do so.

Individual Entry: Aaron - 21/09/14:

I also completed my essay for my music video analysis today. I analysed Imagine Dragons' song 'It's Time' which helped me increase my understanding of the alternative rock genre. The conventions, messages and values, along with stereotypical features are all areas where I feel I now know more about from completing this essay. I hope to apply these to our final product to ensure a high standard of work and a good final grade.

Individual Entry: Idrees - 21/09/14

Today I managed to complete my essay for my music video analysis of The 1975's music video 'Robbers'. Doing this task has helped me a lot as it has increased my knowledge of the alternative rock genre. I now have a greater understanding of the typical conventions and stereotypical features used in music videos for this genre. This task will help me when I start filming as I will know what to include in the video to get a high grade. For example including narrative and performance is a common convention used and I will implement this in our music video to create a successful product.

Week 2 Group Meeting:

Today we had our week 2 group meeting to plan when we were going to do each task throughout the week. We decided to do use Microsoft Word again as we felt it was the best way to stay organised for next weeks deadline.

Group Entry - 19/09/14:

As today was our last lesson before the weekend, we decided to concentrate on completing our moodboards instead of our individual research tasks. We had to create four moodboards in total and so we each created two, sharing the work load. From creating the moodboards we have learned more about the genre, such as how it has developed over time and also who some of the key artists within the alternative rock genre are, both past and present.

Group Meeting:

Today we had a group meeting to discuss when we would be able complete the weekly task sheets throughout each week. We created a timetable using Microsoft word so that it was more likely that we would stay on track and not fall behind. We did this as we feel that it will help our group's organisation.

Individual Entry: Idrees - 17/09/14:

During today's lesson we created a timetable using Microsoft word for our 'minutes of group meeting' task which will help us stay organised throughout the week. This will help us stay on track and not fall behind.

Individual Entry: Aaron - 17/09/14:

Today we constructed a schedule for our 'minutes of group meeting' that shows when we will meet to complete work from this weeks (and future) task sheet. Similarly, last year I marked out on my college timetable when I would work on my portfolio whenever I had free periods and it provided to be very useful, allowing me to keep up with work.

Group Entry - 16/09/14:

Today we received our first task sheet during lesson. We have completed the 'What makes a Level 4 coursework portfolio' task and have also uploaded our target audience moodboards. We are aiming to complete the remaining 4 tasks by this friday.

Group Entry - 12/09/14:

During today's lesson we set up our blog and began to look for possible songs on YouTube that we could create music videos for. We are not sure what genre of music we are going to concentrate on yet, but we need to find a song that does not yet have a music video.

What Makes A Level 4 Coursework Portfolio?

For this task we created a mind map explaining what we thought would make a level 4 coursework portfolio. The mind map has three main branches coming off of it, and each of these branches have a sub heading. Every heading included in the mind map is one of the tabs that is included within our blog. In each section, we talk about what we think will help us achieve high marks for that area of the coursework. Apart from the requirements we have already mentioned, we also need to make sure that all of our work is completed to the highest standard possible and meet all deadlines.
